Tony Watt believes Mika Baur is being overlooked at Celtic as Camilo Durán grabs the headlines with his goals and assists.

The former Hoops striker reckons the German midfielder has helped Celtic cope with the departure of Arne Engels, and believes Martin O’Neill’s summer signings could have plenty more to offer.

And after Celtic battered Hearts on Sunday, Watt spotted something about Baur that is not getting enough credit.

Celtic’s victory against Hearts may not be one of their biggest in SPFL history but it comes close. Where does that performance rank compared to their highest-scoring wins?

Since Hearts were a title rival last season, that's got to make it one of the best

Tony Watt explains how Mika Baur has helped Celtic cope without Arne Engels

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Watt explained why Baur deserves more recognition despite Durán’s impressive attacking numbers.

Watt said: “Mika Baur, Duran’s probably took a spotlight off of him because he’s getting the goals and assists. That’s what he’s been doing in terms of numbers-wise.

“But Baur has come in and really helped the Celtic midfield. When they lost Engels, who off the ball was more imprtant than on the ball for me. He got about, he plugged gaps, and he showed great legs in the middle of the park.”

Watt continued: “Now Baur, he’s just come on, he looks like a buzzbomb. He’s decent all round the park. He can do well in the final third. He’s decent in the middle of the park, and he chips in defensively as well.

“So I think he’s been a very good signing. I think, again, we’re judging everybody early, but these guys are starting to bed in and they’re starting to kick on.”

Mika Baur answers Celtic criticism with impressive Hearts contribution

Baur supplied the corners for Kieran Tierney and Benjamin Nygren’s goals inside the opening ten minutes of Celtic’s 7-1 hammering of Hearts on Sunday.

Chris Sutton had previously criticised Baur’s set-piece delivery following Celtic’s defeat to Rangers in September, but his corners against Hearts helped O’Neill’s side race into an early lead.

Watt reckons there could be even more to come from Celtic’s new arrivals.

He said: “I’d really, really like to see in three, four, five weeks’ time when our few games, we know in their teammates a bit more how far these guys can really go because it could be the difference.”
