David Benavidez Promises What Michal Cieslak Cannot Deliver

David Benavidez is promising more than a victory over Michal Cieslak can deliver. Collecting the WBC cruiserweight belt on December 5 would move him closer to undisputed status, but beating an opponent he is already expected to dominate will do little to establish him as the division’s best.

“I’m gonna make a statement and show everybody that I’m the best in the world,” Benavidez said at Wednesday’s Los Angeles press conference, according to The Ring. That claim requires a fight with Jai Opetaia. Cieslak offers another championship, but beating him cannot settle who rules cruiserweight.

Benavidez will defend his WBA and WBO titles against Cieslak in a DAZN PPV main event at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The location gives the Phoenix native a home-state audience, and a destructive performance would give those fans something to celebrate. Whether it changes his standing beyond that crowd is another matter.

The difficulty is selling an expected result as a major achievement. Cieslak is not widely known among casual fans, and Benavidez’s praise of his abilities cannot supply the recognition this promotion needs.

“He poses some challenges,” Benavidez said. “He has good combinations, he has a good jab, he just beat Jean Pascal in his last fight. I take nothing away from him. He’s a great fighter.”

Cieslak stopped Pascal in four rounds in June 2025 to win the WBC interim title. He subsequently became full champion when the sanctioning body stripped Noel Mikaelian. He enters this fight with a 28-2 record and 22 knockouts, but without having fought since that Pascal victory.

Those details explain how Cieslak obtained his belt. They do less to explain why beating him would prove Benavidez is the best in the world. Cieslak has yet to defend the full championship, and his most recent victory will be roughly 18 months old by fight night.

Benavidez already delivered a forceful introduction to cruiserweight when he stopped Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in six rounds on May 2. Another stoppage could reinforce his reputation as a dangerous puncher at the weight. It would still leave Opetaia unbeaten and available as the opponent capable of testing his claim to supremacy.

The Ring recognizes Opetaia as its cruiserweight champion and ranks Benavidez as his leading contender. Benavidez has also spoken about facing him on Cinco de Mayo weekend in May 2027. That is the fight with a clear sporting argument behind it: two unbeaten champions settling their positions against each other.

An opponent does not need a famous name to make a victory significant. But the opponent must offer something that changes how the winner is viewed. Cieslak would need to be regarded as a serious threat for beating him to produce the reaction Benavidez promises.

Benavidez risks mistaking a growing belt collection for growing public interest. A third title gives him another achievement to list. Beating Opetaia would give fans a much stronger reason to call him the best cruiserweight.
