Yuki Kato leads youth basketball team to national tournament

Yuki Kato moved to Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, approximately six years ago with no prior ties to the region, starting as a local revitalization co-op member and building a youth  basketball program that has reached national tournament competition.

From Tokyo to a Quiet Gymnasium in Nichinan

Growing up in Tokyo, Kato began playing basketball seriously in her first year of junior high school, driven by a desire to master difficult skills. Following her collegiate career, she joined the Women's Japan Basketball League (W League) team Fujitsu Red Wave, playing until 2017.

After retiring, Kato spent time studying languages in Canada and Australia. While planning her next steps upon returning to Japan, she learned about the government-backed Regional revitalization co-op program. Drawn to the idea of living in a regional area and noting that Nichinan and Hokkaido were recruiting sports-focused members, she applied to Nichinan despite having no personal connections to western Japan.

Transforming an Abandoned Facility Into a Training Ground

Arriving in July 2020 with the initial intention of returning to Tokyo after a three-year term, Kato began searching for a place to coach. When she asked municipal officials about available courts, a staff member directed her to an aging, unused gymnasium. Inside, she found hanging basketball hoops that reminded her of the people who once played there.

Choosing the neglected building, Kato cleaned the wooden floors and painted fresh court lines herself. Her early sessions drew just two participants, and local skeptics occasionally told her she would eventually return to Tokyo. By the final year of her co-op tenure, consistent coaching and dedication had grown her youth program to roughly 100 participants.

Launching Wynix Basketball Club and Reaching National Competition

In 2024, Kato converted her training program into a formal club team for junior high school girls named WYNIX BASKETBALL. The organization takes its name from the phrase With You from ZERO, combining those initials with NIX, representing zero, to teach players the joy of building skills from the ground up.

Operating across practices in both Nichinan and Miyakonojo, the club currently serves 11 junior high school players. In 2025, the team qualified for the U15 Club Basketball Games national tournament.

Connecting Past Inspiration with Present Leadership

Kato’s journey in basketball has come full circle through lifelong connections forged in the sport. As a sixth-grader watching games on television, she was captivated by a female player whose style she admired. Years later, after joining the Fujitsu Red Wave, the team’s head coach—the very player she watched on television as a child—extended her the offer to join the roster.

Today, Kato guides her players with the hope that the sport will provide similar life-enriching encounters. Working alongside young athletes in Miyazaki, she continues the daily training sessions that began with an empty gym and two participants.
