Boca Juniors goalkeeper Álvaro Montero has addressed his whirlwind arrival at the club and his standing alongside club legend Óscar Córdoba, speaking candidly during an appearance on ESPN Colombia reported by Bolavip Argentina. Montero arrived in Buenos Aires during a busy transfer window prompted by a severe injury to Agustín Marchesín and inconsistent performances from Leandro Brey, stepping immediately into high-stakes fixtures under intense pressure.

Reflecting on his rapid integration, Montero detailed the abrupt transition from his arrival to his first match. “If you remember, I arrived at the club on a Saturday and was already debuting on a Tuesday,” Montero stated, as reported by Bolavip Argentina. “Everything happened very quickly, and that is part of growth and the acclimate process with your teammates. I faced it that way, as a nice challenge and enjoying every step. I am in a place where I have always wanted to be and trying to enjoy everything I can.”

Confronting the Legacy of Oscar Cordoba

The conversation took a significant turn when Córdoba joined the ESPN panel to welcome his compatriot. Montero acknowledged the immense shadow cast by the former goalkeeper, who achieved legendary status winning the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup with Boca Juniors between 1999 and 2001. Según TyC  Sports, Córdoba había recomendado a Montero a Juan Román Riquelme y al consejo de fútbol de Boca.

Rather than embracing comparisons to the two-time Copa América winner, Montero urged observers to view him independently. “I have said it many times to the idol [Óscar Córdoba], here he is a reference for the club and the Boca fan, for the history of the club and for me particularly, being Colombian,” Montero said, via Bolavip Argentina. “It is a nice challenge for one, because being Colombian they are going to measure or compare you, but understanding that what he achieved is not easy at all.”

Montero emphasized the time required to build a permanent reputation at a major club. “Many people are not aware of how difficult it is to achieve what Óscar achieved,” he added. “Obviously with the desire to do things well, as I talked about with him, hopefully I can get closer to what he did in the club. Besides, you cannot win that position in a year or six months, it is something that takes time. Hopefully we have that time to build a legacy and something nice here.”

The Intensity of Argentine Football and La Bombonera

Beyond individual comparisons, Montero pointed to the demanding nature of domestic competition and the unique atmosphere at Estadio Alberto J. Armando. Having experienced high-pressure environments throughout his career—including stints with Deportes Tolima, San Lorenzo, and Vélez Sarsfield, as noted by El Intransigente—the 31-year-old goalkeeper admitted that the fervor of Boca supporters exceeded his expectations.

“From Argentine football mainly the intensity, all teams compete against you, everyone fights you and doesn’t let you think,” Montero told ESPN Colombia, as captured by Bolavip Argentina. “But particularly it has surprised me how the Boca fan lives the day to day and the matches. Entering La Bombonera is an experience that you have to live to be able to feel what you are talking about, you cannot describe that.”

Preparing for the Copa Sudamericana Final

Montero y Boca Juniors se preparan para la final de la Copa Sudamericana contra el Atlético Mineiro. For Montero, reaching the continental showcase validates the club’s demanding objectives.

“This is a club that forces you to be fighting these instances,” Montero told ESPN Argentina. “Behind the club there is a very great history with many titles. On a personal level, it is a very great happiness, it was an objective that the club had set for itself, beyond wanting to continue in Libertadores, once you are in Sudamericana, you have to compete with everything, with the ambition of wanting to win. At least it is my first international final.”
