Werder Bremen striker Niclas Füllkrug has responded calmly to Germany national team coach Jürgen Klopp regarding a potential international comeback, stating that the coach simply stated factual truths about his age while leading the squad into a new era, as reported by welt.de.
The debate surrounding a possible return to the DFB squad intensified after Füllkrug scored his seventh and eighth goals of the Bundesliga season during Werder Bremen’s 3-2 victory against FSV Mainz 05. Speaking in the ZDF-Sportstudio, the 33-year-old forward addressed remarks made by national team coach Jürgen Klopp concerning his age and future international prospects, according to welt.de.
“I believe that the national coach made a pretty clear statement. Everyone can interpret from that what they want to interpret,” Füllkrug said on the program.
Füllkrug added that the national team under Klopp has initiated a fresh era focused on youth and dynamism. “If that is the case, I understand that. And if not, then we can still react to it,” he noted.
Days prior to Bremen’s fixture in Mainz, Klopp addressed media inquiries regarding Füllkrug’s international future during a broadcast appearance on DAZN, as detailed by bild.de. The national coach outlined a pragmatic view on squad composition.
“Niclas Füllkrug scores goal after goal in the Bundesliga, but he is 33. That is not my fault,” Klopp told DAZN with a smile, as cited by bild.de. He elaborated on the federation’s timeline: “We have a present, a medium-term future, and a long-term future. In the present, it can certainly work, medium-term under certain circumstances also, and long-term, well, we will just have to see.”

Füllkrug’s performance against Mainz pushed his goal tally to eight for the campaign, converting two penalties in the 3-2 win that cemented his status at the top of the Bundesliga goalscoring chart, according to bild.de. In doing so, he achieved a feat previously only matched at Bremen by Rudi Völler, who also scored eight goals in the opening phase of a season (82/83).
Despite his prolific output, Füllkrug maintained that his focus remains entirely on club duties. “He listed facts, nothing more. I am 33 and I score goal after goal. That was without an opinion. It didn’t motivate me extra at all,” Füllkrug said after the Mainz match, as reported by welt.de. He further emphasized to bild.de: “I don’t play for a nomination. I play for Werder.” To date, Füllkrug has earned 24 caps for the German national team.
The match in Mainz also featured a notable sideline moment when Füllkrug was substituted in the 81st minute, making way for teammate Itten, as reported by bild.de. Television cameras caught the striker gesticulating and shouting near the Bremen bench after leaving the pitch.
Addressing the incident, Füllkrug took full responsibility for the animated exchange. “Ironically, it wasn’t because of the substitution, it just took too long for me,” he explained to bild.de. “I had signaled early that I had to come out. I noticed that I was no longer at 100 percent and wanted a fresh player to come in during that phase. I thought there were substitution opportunities earlier, but I probably got that wrong. Therefore, it was my mistake.”
Werder Bremen returns to competitive action in the Bundesliga schedule for their next fixture.
