Girona ended a five-season league direct free-kick drought on Sunday, defeating Andorra 2–0 at Montilivi as Bryan Gil opened the scoring with a set-piece from the edge of the area.
The 2–0 win at Montilivi on Sunday was anticipated between a promotion contender and a side lingering near the lower reaches of the standings, but the opening goal delivered a statistical rarity. When Bryan Gil stepped up to a free-kick just outside the box, few in the stands expected it to find the net. The shot broke a drought stretching across five seasons for the club in league competition.
Prior to Gil’s strike, Girona’s last direct free-kick goal in league play occurred during the 2019–20 season. Aday Benítez, now head coach of Mirandés, scored twice from free-kicks that campaign against Extremadura and Lugo.
The intervening years saw an extensive turnover of attacking talent pass through Montilivi without a single player managing a direct free-kick goal in league action. Neither Savinho, Danjuma, Tsygankov, Ounahi, nor Pablo Torre managed to convert a dead-ball situation during their stints with the club in the top division.
The only exception during the broader drought came in the Champions League, when Juanpe scored against Slovan Bratislava on October 22, 2024.
Bryan Gil had already offered a preview of his dead-ball capabilities during the summer, scoring from a direct free-kick in a pre-season friendly against Castelló.
Following the 2–0 result against Andorra, Girona returns to preparation for its upcoming league fixtures as the club looks to maintain momentum.
