Juventus pursues Pavel Šulc as Lyon sets €50M price tag
Foot01

Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Pavel Šulc has emerged as a primary target for Juventus ahead of the January transfer window, though negotiations face a significant hurdle over a reported €50 million valuation.

Juventus Pursues the Czech International

Juventus has positioned itself as the club most interested in securing Šulc during the winter window, according to reports from Tutto Juve and TMW. The 25-year-old Czech international joined Lyon on a long-term contract running through June 2029, establishing himself as a central figure in Paulo Fonseca’s squad. Across nine appearances this season, Šulc has contributed one goal and three assists, following a previous campaign where he tallied 11 goals and 3 assists in Ligue 1 play.

Beyond the Italian giants, Atlético de Madrid and Aston Villa are also monitoring the player’s situation, alongside interest from Leeds and Wrexham, though all conditions had never been met previously. Both clubs possess the financial capacity to meet Lyon’s steep valuation, setting up a competitive market should the French club decide to entertain bids.

Lyon Sets a €50 Million Price Tag

Lyon leadership has adopted a firm stance regarding any mid-season departure, demanding an indemnity of €50 million to part ways with the playmaker. Tutto Juve reported that the Serie A club views this figure as excessive, complicating potential discussions for a January transfer.

Previous transfer windows saw English clubs register interest in the former Plzeň standout, but discussions stalled over financial terms. Šulc addressed his future in an interview with Nova Sport, noting that staying in Lyon presents no personal crisis. If nobody buys me, I will play for Lyon. What a disaster! Šulc told the Czech outlet, adding, That is of course ironic, because Lyon is an immense club. The world will not collapse for me, while emphasizing his appreciation for the club’s confidence in retaining him.

Intersection With the Loïs Openda Transfer Situation

The discussions between Lyon and Juventus are further complicated by the status of Belgian forward Loïs Openda. Currently on loan at Lyon from Juventus for the 2026–2027 season without an option to buy, Openda has impressed Fonseca with his work rate and impact in the attacking third.

While the Bianconeri value Openda at approximately €30 million, the patronne of the OL has expressed reluctance to commit to a permanent fee of that magnitude without securing a Champions League qualification. Michele Kang is not yet ready to drop €27 million, a figure which, when added to the €3.5 million loan fee, would constitute the third most expensive transfer in club history, behind the €32 million spent on Niakhaté and the €35 million for Orel Mangala. Exploratory ideas regarding a potential structured arrangement involving both players have circulated, though formal negotiations remain at an early stage.

Player Development and Future Outlook

Šulc’s adaptation in France has experienced mixed phases since his arrival. While his output on the pitch has justified the club’s sporting expectations, the midfielder revealed to Nova Sport that he discontinued French language lessons after three months following friction with local residents. Nonetheless, his sporting role remains unambiguous.

The team counts a lot on me in pressing and defensive work, Šulc said in his Nova Sport interview. And since I am capable of also bringing statistics, it is equally important for them. With the winter window approaching, Lyon faces the dual challenge of protecting its squad depth for domestic and European campaigns while managing the financial pressures that could force major roster decisions.
