Slavia Prague fell 2–0 to tournament debutants Sabah in Baku during the second round of the UEFA Champions League, extending the Czech club’s winless streak in the competition’s main phase to 21 matches.

Missed Opportunities in Baku

Midfielder Lukáš Provod expressed deep frustration following the defeat, admitting that the Czech champions failed to perform to their usual standards against what was considered the most manageable of their eight opponents. Ty týmy tu nejsou náhodou. Cítili jsme šanci a promarnili jsme ji, Provod stated. Další porážka v Lize mistrů, složité. Musíme najít důvody, proč to nevyšlo. Musíme se soustředit na další zápasy, abychom je zvládli, he added. Provod pointed to a missed opportunity in the 61st minute when he failed to equalize from close range after a goalkeeper block left him temporarily disoriented during the scramble for the rebound. Vždy se dá samozřejmě udělat něco jinak. Byla to obrovská šance. Snažil jsem se trefit první střelu co nejlíp. Nechápu, že to tam nespadlo. Nebyla to ale jediná šance, celkově jsme jich měli dost. Pokud chceme být úspěšní, musíme góly dávat, he remarked. The 29-year-old Czech international captained the side during the closing stages after Tomáš Holeš was substituted off the pitch.

Tactical Stumbles and Midfield Control

Slavia manager Jindřich Trpišovský struggled to explain the flat performance, noting that the team was thoroughly outplayed in the center of the pitch. Jsme zklamaní z výsledku i výkonu, nebyli jsme to my. Hlavně v prvním poločase, který paradoxně skončil 0:0. Druhý byl lepší, skončil ale 0:2. Trpišovský stated that none of his players reached their maximum potential and acknowledged that the team’s lingering struggle to convert chances in European fixtures mirrors previous disappointments, such as a 4–1 defeat away to Pafos in the previous campaign. Podobný zápas jako na Pafosu, máme hodně šancí. Dost na to, abychom vyhráli. Nedokážeme se dotknout našeho maxima, the manager lamented, recalling the January loss in Cyprus. The result marks the first time a Czech team has lost in cup duels against an Azerbaijani opponent.

A Demanding Domestic and European Schedule

Slavia must quickly pivot away from the disappointment in Azerbaijan as domestic and continental fixtures press forward. Nesmíme promarnit poločas a musíme proměňovat šance. Věřím, že jsme si to nechali na příští týden, he concluded. The squad boarded a late-night flight back to Prague to prepare for Saturday’s fixture against Hradec Králové, where the club sits as the undefeated league leader. Following the domestic weekend clash, Slavia will travel to Turkey to face Fenerbahce in the third round of the Champions League on Tuesday.
