Well, if you wanted parity in college football, you got it. Week 7 proved to be the biggest chaos agent of the year, as all of the top 7 teams lost. As a result, several teams you may not have expected to see at the top of the polls find themselves in pole position for prime playoff seeding. Here are the most overrated and underrated teams in this week's edition of the US LBM coaches poll.
There's a first time for everything in college football. Georgia winning at home almost felt inevitable... until Week 7 that is. For the first time since 2019, Georgia lost within the friendly confines of Sanford Stadium. That it was to unranked Auburn was equally shocking. Most shockingly was that this was the first time that both No. 1-ranked teams lost on the final play of the game in consecutive weeks. However, the biggest concern for Bulldogs fans may have to be the play of Gunner Stockton, who uncharacteristically turned the ball over three times. The most invincible-looking team through six weeks of play now doesn't necessarily look that way now.
The Cougars are proving that against all odds, the Big 12 may be the best conference in college football. With a stunning upset against Notre Dame, they put themselves on the map as a team to be reckoned with. Bear Bachmeier also proved he's a gamer of a QB, throwing 224 yards and a touchdown while also catching one and rushing for another. In three weeks time, the Cougars take on Utah in the Holy War in what could be a huge matchup for CFP implications and prime seeding.
It looks as if the Crimson Tide haven't quite recovered from their loss to Georgia two weeks ago and it showed in their third straight loss to Tennessee on the road. Keelon Russell looked mortal, throwing two picks and only having 149 yards through the air. The defense wasn't much better, as DeSean Bishop got back to what he did best, running for 159 yards and two touchdowns. This could have been a great get right game for Kalen DeBoer's group that instead turned into a loss that may have just eliminated them from CFP contention.
While I could have named Alabama's opponents underrated, I would like to point out what is happening in Lexington, Kentucky. Will Stein in his first season has completely turned around the trajectory of the Wildcats and has them looking like a true national title contender. Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey has turned out to be a great addition, operating the offense at a high clip. While the offense won't blow you away, it is fundamentally sound and in an SEC proving to be cannibalistic, Kentucky is sitting pretty as one of the SEC teams to look out for later down the stretch.
Yet again, I continue to be appalled that Oregon has managed to stick around the rankings. While Dylan Raiola's redemption performance was a nice story this week, it should never have happened against a Nebraska team that they should have beaten fairly easily if they were truly a solid football team. The fact that the voters seem adamant that they think quality matters when it comes to the Ducks is surprising considering the tenor of the college football landscape. It seems unfair that several Group of 6 teams continue to be overlooked while Oregon has two bad losses on their resume and are without their starting QB.
