Villarreal surrendered a two-lead to lose 4-2 against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday at Anfield, where 61,000 spectators watched the Spanish side suffer their second defeat of the European campaign.
The visiting team kept Liverpool under intense pressure during the opening half-hour of the match. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute by capitalizing on a wayward backpass from Virgil van Dijk to beat goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Gueye, Saliba, and Moleiro controlled the tempo in the middle of the pitch. Moleiro created repeated problems for the English defense between the lines. Cardona then added a second goal in the 28th minute by running behind the English backline to finish a precise pass from Saliba, leaving the visitors in apparent command.
The home side altered the momentum through a set-piece sequence in the 36th minute. Alexis Mac Allister scored with a header following a corner kick, bringing Anfield back to life. The Argentine midfielder nearly equalized shortly afterward with a shot that drifted past the goalpost. Just before the interval in stoppage time, Araújo scored to level the score at 2-2 before the whistle.
Liverpool increased their defensive intensity and attacking pressure after the break, utilizing Wirtz as a central offensive threat. Villarreal lost creative momentum after substituting Moleiro and Saliba. In the 65th minute, the English side completed the comeback when Ngumoha used his speed to beat Cardona and delivered a pass back that Mac Allister converted for his goal. Three minutes later, Wirtz extended the lead to 4-2 by punishing a dangerous turnover in Villarreal’s defensive third.
Villarreal mounted a late response after steadying their defense. Ayoze hit the goalpost with a long-range effort, and Oluwaseyi reduced the deficit to 4-3 in the 87th minute with a late strike. Despite late pressure, Liverpool maintained their defensive shape to secure the three points under referee Szymon Marciniak.
