Sandown and Shanklin Tornados win 37-20 away at Havant

The Tornados travelled to south-east Hampshire to face the Barracudas, and the hosts made the stronger start, scoring early after a fortunate decision, although the conversion was missed.

Sandown and Shanklin then moved into the Havant 22-metre area.

An accurately executed driving maul created the opening for Ben Kulik, who crossed for the visitors’ first score.

The teams exchanged attacks as the conditions became poorer. Havant scored out wide before Jordan Langdon continued his scoring run by powering through two defenders to level the game.

Handling errors affected both teams. The Tornados were pushed back, and Havant regained the lead after a well-worked move.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, Sandown and Shanklin responded. George Shannon made a long run and broke through four defenders to score.

The half-time score was 20-15 to Havant.

The Tornados continued their attacking play after the interval. Tom Mills scored early in the second half after finishing a move created by his teammates.

Sandown and Shanklin then took the lead through Jack Winter. He and prop Tom Sewell helped the visitors control the scrum, while Sewell also made a series of tackles.

Carries from forwards and backs, including Keegan Boudier, Kulik and Rhys Mundell, helped the Tornados reach a scrum five metres from the Havant line.

The ball was passed to Gary Warvill at number 10.

He stepped inside the defence and crossed for the final try of the match, completing a 37-20 victory for Sandown and Shanklin.

Captains Chris Ormerod and Liam Little were praised for their tackling and leadership.

Reuben, Will and Ryan also made try-saving contributions.

Connor and Brad made their debuts for the Tornados and were reported to have impressed.

Ormerod said: “Overall, we couldn't be prouder of the lads for their grit and performance.”
