Luton Town – History Could Be Repeated
Luton Town – History Could Be Repeated

Slipped under the radar.

Purely by chance, I noticed that last night, the draw for the 1st round of the FA Cup was being made.

There was no media fanfare heralding the draw, just a small headline that barely caught my attention.

It seems that the days when the FA Cup draw was almost a national event, are long gone.

I cannot be the only one who, in my younger days, used to find a quiet corner, tune in my portable transistor radio and listen, intently, to the draw being made.

Indeed, the FA Cup has provided several wonderful memories.

I can recall, years ago, the wall behind the goal collapsing, in an away tie at Chester City and the scramble to pull those trapped clear, back in January 1977.

Also, seeing, when we were a non-league side, the Hatters, thanks to a goal from Scott Rendell, knocking out the Premier League side, Norwich City, at Carrow Road, backin January 2013.

But one memory that still haunts me, is the semi-final tie, at Villa Park, against Everton, that day the Hatters came so close to reaching their second ever FA Cup Final, back in April 1985.

Of course, the FA Cup is a competition Luton Town have never won, we have only made the final, at Wembley Stadium, on one occasion, when a run in the wonderful competition, in the 1958/1959 season, saw our hopes of lifting the most famous domestic cup trophy, in the world, dashed by Nottingham Forest, with the Hatters losing 2-1.

Now although I have aspirations of Luton Town lifting the FA Cup, I remain adamant it will not happen this season, in fact a successful run, for me, would be to reach the third round and grab a tie against one of the big boys.

But you never know!

As for our opposition in the 1st round of the 2026/2027, Luton Town were given a home tie against either Chesham United or Forest Green Rovers, with the tie set to be played on the weekend starting 7th November.

Strangely enough, if Forest Green Rovers beat Chesham United, then we face a repeat of the 1st round tie of last season when the Hatters emerged 4-3 winners, could history repeat itself?
