Ex-Swindon Town striker says Aaron Drinan needs support

The early stages of the season have not gone as Swindon would have liked, as they have only won once since early September and have been pretty goal-shy.

However, the division remains very closely contested, with three points separating Walsall in sixth with Bristol Rovers in 16th.

Swindon are presently part of that pack of teams stuttering along in the middle, and will hope to find some form and make a break towards the top sides.

Speaking to The Adver, courtesy of Lyllo Casino, Martin, who played for Swindon under Paolo Di Canio, explained what Swindon needed to do for them to find consistency in their performances.

He said: “Aaron Drinan, the striker, is doing well still, but I think they need some support for him. I don't think they've got enough goals in the team around him. They'll be looking for people to step up, and from what I looked at previously, their away form has been really poor.

"Looking at the League Two table, it's so tight. It's actually crazy. I think they're 14th in the league or something like that, but they're three points off the play-offs or something crazy.

"Two wins in a row and all of a sudden you're challenging for the play-offs, and everything's rosy again. It's very fickle, and with the league being this tight early on, you just need to keep pace.

“I know they might be a little bit inconsistent, but teams generally will just increase that consistency as the season goes on.”

Prior to picking up five points from the last three games, Ian Holloway was coming under increasing pressure from Swindon fans as their poor form had persisted for much of 2026.

Finding some results and a possible solution to their problems has likely bought Holloway some time, but he will need to follow that up against Rotherham United this weekend.

Martin said that Holloway’s experience could be a decisive factor in Swindon fighting their way out of a disappointing start.

He said: "After last season, having a difficult start can turn very quickly for a manager, so within three or four games people can be calling for your head. I think Ian Holloway did a very good job last year.

"I think it's tough, especially for a manager. You've had a decent season, and all of a sudden you've had a couple of spotty results; people are calling for your head, but he's got the experience to turn that around.

"Ian Holloway is another one who's probably a little bit crazy, people have said that he's eccentric and goes about things differently. But from people I know who have played under him, they've always had a lot of very good things to say about him.

"So with his experience, if you want someone in the role now where they're under a little bit of pressure and haven't started as well as expected, someone like him feels well-equipped.”
