Garnock secure last-gasp win as impressive revival continues

The Lochshore side made it three wins in their last four fixtures, with their only loss by just one point, with a last-gasp 17-12 victory away to Dunfermline on Saturday.

In treacherous conditions, the match was level at 12-12 heading into the final three minutes of the National Division Four clash.

Despite missing a penalty to go ahead, Garnock were able to recover possession in time to score a try in the final moments to claim the win.

It continued the club's impressive revival after losing their opening four matches of the campaign.

“I think the start of the season was very difficult," Purewal commented. "We couldn’t get any pre-season fixtures and we headed into the without playing any rugby for months.

“It was difficult, and the first the couple of games of the season were hard. It’s good now that we’re in the bulk of the season to finally get some results going.

“At the weekend there, we were confident going into the game but as the weather picked up it was a level playing field.

“But the pleasing thing about the squad at the moment is that we seem to have this new attitude of never say die.

“It was fantastic to see and it’s a credit to the players. They’ve really bought into what I’ve got to say and they’re aspiring to better results which are coming to fruition now."

Many of Garnock's wins in recent weeks have been by a narrow margin with Purewal crediting the hard work of his squad for providing that edge.

He added: “For a lot of people looking out to in, you could say that results have maybe been lucky but, from a group perspective, we really take pride in the fact that we push ourselves.

“There are some boys that this is their first year of senior rugby and they’re really putting their hand up and showing what they’re about.

“It’s great in terms of the future of the club as well and as a management we can only thank the players for that amount of effort."

The run of results has moved Garnock within four points of the top half of the table, though the head coach said his team won't be looking too far ahead just yet.

Purewal continued: “It’s great that we’ve now had a couple of good results and we can see what this team is about.

“We’re taking it one game at a time and we’re going into this weekend confident which is great to say."

Next up for Garnock is a home league match against Stewartry on Saturday, October 31. Kick off at Lochshore is 2pm.

Garnock Rugby Club are still welcoming new players wishing to join their youth set up.

Youngsters of all experience are welcome to come along to training sessions held every week.

Micros sessions run from 10-11am on Sunday whilst primary four, five, six and seven teams train from 6-7pm on Wednesdays and from 11am-12pm on Sundays.
