MAS Fes conceded a stoppage-time equaliser against ASEC Mimosas in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary play-off, while Esperance de Tunis were beaten 1-0 by Asswehly in Libya.
The Moroccan side appeared to be heading into the second leg with a narrow advantage after taking the lead against ASEC at Stade d’Honneur de Meknes on Sunday.
Noureddine Oussama put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute. After Devin Titus held off his marker and created space near the edge of the penalty area, the midfielder was picked out and sent an unstoppable shot beyond Charles Folly to give MAS Fes the lead.
However, the Tigres were unable to protect their advantage. ASEC equalised in the third minute of added time, with the late goal leaving the tie level at 1-1.
Rui Almeida’s team will now travel to Cote d’Ivoire for the return match on 25 October. The concession could prove costly under the away-goals rule, which means MAS Fes will have to negotiate a difficult second leg after failing to win at home.
Earlier on Sunday, Esperance de Tunis were also beaten on their travels, losing 1-0 to Asswehly at Misrata Stadium in Misrata.
The only goal of the game came in the 64th minute, leaving Youcef Belaili and his team-mates needing a two-goal victory in the return fixture to reach the group stage.
That match will be played at Rades on 24 October. The result has put Esperance under pressure, although the Tunisian club have not missed a single final phase of the CAF Champions League since 2017.
