Man United boss Michael Carrick hails Kobbie Mainoo’s return ahead of Chelsea clash as ‘good news’

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has welcomed Kobbie Mainoo’s return to training, describing the midfielder’s progress as “good news” ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

Mainoo has missed United’s last four matches through injury but returned to training this week, raising hopes that he could feature at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Friday, Carrick confirmed that the 21-year-old had resumed some training with the squad, although his availability for the Chelsea encounter remains subject to his fitness.

“Good news, Kobbie done a little bit of training yesterday, so he's back in and around the group, so that's obviously a positive,” Carrick said.

Mainoo last featured in United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on October 10 before picking up an injury. He subsequently missed the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, as well as matches against Como and Bournemouth.

Carrick had previously indicated on October 20 that the midfielder could need around 10 more days to recover, leaving his participation against Chelsea uncertain.

His return offers United another option in midfield as they look to improve their form. The club have endured a difficult start to the campaign, sitting 16th in the Premier League after recording just two wins in 12 matches across all competitions.

Mainoo’s potential availability would provide a timely boost for Carrick, particularly with Carlos Baleba also returning to full fitness after an ankle injury.

United will assess Mainoo’s condition before deciding whether he can feature against Chelsea.
