Achraf Hakimi is one assist away from matching Samuel Eto’o’s record for the most assists by an African player in the Champions League.
The Morocco international set up Paris Saint-Germain’s fourth goal in their 4-2 win over Barca last Tuesday, taking his Champions League assist tally to 19. That puts him joint third among African players, alongside Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, who is not qualified for this season’s competition with Trabzonspor.
Hakimi, who will turn 28 next November, is now behind only Cameroon great Eto’o, who leads the ranking with 20 assists. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back could therefore move level with Eto’o and potentially take sole possession of the record during the current campaign.
The latest achievement adds to a growing list of milestones for Hakimi, who has also been enjoying an outstanding spell with the Morocco national team. It is not the first time he has challenged a record associated with Eto’o.
On 30 May, Hakimi equalled the former Cameroon striker’s record for Champions League titles won by an African player, reaching three victories in the competition.
He lifted the trophy with Real Madrid in 2018 before adding two more successes with Paris Saint-Germain in 2025 and 2026. Eto’o won the Champions League twice with Barca, in 2006 and 2009, and then claimed his third title with Inter Milan in 2010.
Hakimi is also, by some measures, the most decorated African player in football history, with 19 trophies to his name.
The defender has 103 international appearances and 12 goals for Morocco, and his latest assist against Barca has brought him within touching distance of another record held by one of the continent’s most celebrated players.
