Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has thrown his support behind former Black Stars captain André Ayew, saying the experienced forward has the credentials to become the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Ayew has emerged as one of several high-profile names being linked with next year's GFA presidential election, although the former Ghana skipper is yet to officially announce whether he will contest for the position.
The 36-year-old, who currently serves as the chief executive officer of Nania FC, recently disclosed that he has received calls from several football stakeholders encouraging him to consider entering the race for Ghana football's highest office.
Speaking on the possibility of Ayew becoming GFA president, Owusu Achau expressed confidence in the former Olympique Marseille star's ability to lead the country's football governing body.
According to the Bechem United president, Ayew's vast experience as a player at both domestic and international levels, coupled with his understanding of Ghanaian football, makes him a suitable candidate for the role.
"Well, I believe Dede Ayew is mature, and he has seen it all in Ghana football and world football at large."
"So if he says he wants to be GFA president, it is refreshing. It's okay because he knows he is capable of doing it," Owusu Achau said.
Ayew enjoyed one of the most successful playing careers of any Ghanaian footballer, winning the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup with the Black Satellites before becoming one of the Black Stars' most influential players.
The veteran forward has represented clubs including Olympique Marseille, Arles-Avignon, Swansea City, West Ham United, Fenerbahçe, Al Sadd, Nottingham Forest, Le Havre and NAC Breda, building a wealth of experience across Europe's top leagues and the Middle East.
His potential entry into football administration has generated widespread discussion, with many believing his playing experience and leadership qualities could bring a fresh perspective to the GFA.
The race for the presidency is already shaping up to be a competitive one, with football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United CEO Elloeny Amande, former GFA vice-president George Afriyie, former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, and former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan all being linked with possible bids.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to announce the official timetable and nomination process for the presidential election in the coming months as prospective candidates continue to position themselves ahead of the vote.
