Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku revealed that all 20 national teams, including the Black Stars and Black Queens, rely on a single team bus purchased 18 years ago, highlighting the association's logistical challenges.
Okraku disclosed that the bus, acquired in 2008, is now out of service, forcing the GFA to hire one during the most recent international window to meet the transportation needs of the national teams.
He made the revelation on Wednesday before Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports, where he outlined challenges facing the association and called for greater government support.
“Your Black Stars, your Black Queens, and the 18 other national teams have access to one bus that was purchased by the GFA in 2008. Now the bus is broken. During the last international window, the GFA had to rent a bus,” Okraku told the committee.
The GFA president described the situation as one of the basic challenges undermining efforts to build a sustainable football structure in the country. He argued that inadequate logistical support makes it difficult for the association to create the conditions needed for consistent success across the national teams.
“If we want to create a sustained football ecosystem, these are the fundamentals. These are the reasons we have not had sustained and continuous victorious stories over generations. These are the hard truths,” he added.
The revelation comes at a time when Okraku and his administration are facing growing criticism over the state of Ghanaian football, with calls for his resignation and, in some quarters, the dissolution of the current GFA administration.
His appearance before Parliament provided an opportunity to explain some of the financial and operational difficulties facing the association, while making a case for increased state support.
The disclosure that 20 national teams rely on one ageing bus is likely to raise further questions about the level of logistical investment in Ghana football and the resources available to support the country's national teams.
