Anthony Baffoe is no longer part of the five-member committee tasked with finding a new Black Stars head coach, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that committee chairman Fred Pappoe briefed the association’s Executive Council (ExCo) on the former Ghana international’s exit at its meeting last Thursday. No reason was given for the decision.
Baffoe had been named alongside Stephen Appiah, a former Black Stars captain, legal practitioner Agbesi Dzakpasu and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah on the panel, which Pappoe chairs. It was set up jointly by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation after Carlos Queiroz’s exit following Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Earlier reports had suggested that both Baffoe and Chibsah had turned down their appointments. Asante Twum’s confirmation, however, related only to Baffoe.
Speaking on Max FM, Asante Twum said the committee has carried on with the remaining four members since being sworn in.
“The chairman of the search committee, Fred Pappoe, confirmed to the Executive Council that Anthony was not part of the committee. This is based on the last meeting they held, which was last week Thursday, which I was present for,” he said.
“There was no reason given. All he said was that Tony had withdrawn. He mentioned that the four of them have been doing the job since they were sworn into office.”
The panel’s mandate is to name Queiroz’s permanent successor as Ghana try to recover from back-to-back qualifying defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia. The results have piled pressure on the team to revive their campaign.
Meanwhile, the GFA and the Sports Ministry have put an interim technical team in place, led by Kim Lars Björkegren. Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram are his assistants, while ex-Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda takes charge of goalkeeping.
That team is expected to handle the Black Stars in November’s AFCON qualifying double-header against Somalia.
The search committee is expected to submit its recommendation for the substantive role, with the appointment due before Ghana’s final round of qualifiers next year.
