Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has emerged as a potential contender for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency ahead of next year’s elections.
The country’s all-time leading goalscorer is being linked with the top job amid reports that incumbent president Kurt Okraku may not seek a third term in office.
Gyan, however, is yet to officially declare his intention to contest the election as speculation grows over the future leadership of Ghana football.
The development follows a controversial amendment to the GFA statutes and constitution at the association’s 2025 Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The amendment extended the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three, fuelling speculation that Okraku, who also serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would seek another mandate.
However, his administration has faced mounting scrutiny following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, missing the tournament for the first time in more than two decades.
With uncertainty surrounding Okraku’s political future, Gyan has emerged as a possible candidate to lead the country’s football governing body, according to Joy Sports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai.

I don’t know if it's deliberate grooming by the FA president to put him in a position to understudy football administration.

The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker remains Ghana’s record goalscorer and Africa’s leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history. He has also held several roles under Okraku’s administration and currently serves as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams.
Gyan is not the only individual being linked with the GFA presidency, with several football administrators and former players reportedly considering a run for the position.
They include football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United chief executive Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew.
Annim Addo, a former member of the GFA Executive Council, is involved in club football and manages Gyan.
Gyambrah brings experience in regional football administration, having previously chaired the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association.
Amande, who heads Karela United, has also sought a place on the GFA Executive Council but was unsuccessful.
Ayew, meanwhile, enjoyed an extensive career with the Black Stars and several clubs in Europe and beyond. He was part of Ghana’s squad that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009 and currently serves as chief executive officer of Nania FC.
A former GFA vice-president is also expected to enter the contest, potentially increasing competition for the presidency.
Despite the growing list of potential candidates, it remains unclear whether Gyan will formally enter the race.
The former Black Stars captain represented Ghana at multiple World Cups and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, establishing himself as one of the country’s most recognisable football figures.
His possible candidacy would add a high-profile name to what could become a competitive contest for control of Ghana football.
The GFA has yet to announce the official timetable and nomination process for the presidential election, leaving prospective candidates waiting for further clarity on the electoral arrangements.
