Lens v Marseille: Can the Sang et Or recover from Champions League humiliation?

RC Lens will try to respond to their historic Champions League collapse when they host Olympique de Marseille at Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Sunday.

Lens are ninth in Ligue 1 after nine matches, having lost 1-0 at Lille last weekend. Marseille are two points ahead in sixth following a 2-0 victory over Toulouse.

The home side’s preparations have been overshadowed by Wednesday’s 9-1 defeat by Como. It was the heaviest loss ever suffered by a team in the history of the Champions League, leaving Yannick Cahuzac’s players facing the prospect of a third successive defeat in all competitions for the first time this season.

Lens have lost their past three European matches by an aggregate score of 14-1, although their domestic form is stronger, with three wins from their last four Ligue 1 fixtures. They have also won three of their past four home league meetings with Marseille, including a 2-1 victory in this fixture last season.

Only one of Lens’ goals at home in the Champions League this season has come at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, but nine of their 16 Ligue 1 goals have been scored there. Ruben Aguilar, who scored Lens’ only goal against Como, is expected to play.

Florian Thauvin has contributed to three goals in his past two Ligue 1 appearances at the stadium. Odsonne Edouard is doubtful with an adductor problem, while Ismaelo Ganiou is recovering from knee surgery. Abdallah Sima has a leg problem, Jhoanner Chavez is struggling with a thigh injury and Maik Nawrocki remains sidelined after rupturing a cruciate ligament.

Marseille travel north in confident mood after winning four of their past five matches in all competitions. Their latest success was a first victory in the Europa League this season, a 1-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday. It was their first away victory in the competition since beating AEK Athens 2-0 in 2023, and the result means they have won three of their past four away games in all competitions.

The visitors are seeking a third consecutive clean sheet for the first time in 2026. They are also aiming to record successive Ligue 1 matches without conceding for the first time since March.

Marseille rank second in the league for goals per game, with 2.2, and average possession, at 55.7%. They are three points behind second-placed Lille. The Olympians have scored seven goals in their past two Ligue 1 away matches, two more than in their previous 10 domestic games away from Stade Velodrome.

Derek Cornelius has a hip problem for Marseille, while Keyliane Abdallah has been hit and Emerson Palmieri is doubtful because of a knee issue. Amine Gouiri has scored in his past two appearances for the club, including the winner against Bayer Leverkusen. He had also scored alongside Amine Harit in the victory over Toulouse.

The prediction is for a 0-2 Marseille win, with an exact-score price of 14.50 on Betclic. Other suggested bets are a Marseille victory at 2.55, fewer than 3.5 goals at 1.55 and Amine Gouiri to score at 2.50.
