Former Hearts of Oak captain Lawrence Adjah-Tetteh has called for the inclusion of home-based players in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in a double-header in November, with Adjah-Tetteh believing that combining locally based talents with foreign-based players could strengthen the national team.
Ghana will be seeking maximum points from the two matches after suffering defeats in their opening Group C fixtures against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
Adjah-Tetteh believes the decision on squad selection should rest with the technical team, urging supporters to trust the coaches to identify the players capable of delivering positive results.
“I think when we blend local and foreign-based players, it will be okay. It depends on the coach. He will identify the players who can fit into the team. We should allow him to come in and select his players so that we can have a better team,” the former Ghana international told Citi Sports.
The former Hearts of Oak skipper also called on Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars, insisting that Somalia are beatable opponents.
“We want a win for the Black Stars to qualify. We can beat Somalia, and we should give the team maximum support,” he added.
Adjah-Tetteh further expressed confidence in interim coaching duo Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko, citing their experience as former players and their understanding of Ghanaian football.
“I have confidence in Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko because they are former players and they have the experience. They can do it. I believe we can win and even qualify,” he said.
Ghana will host Somalia on Thursday, November 12, at the Essipong Sports Stadium in Sekondi before travelling for the return fixture on November 16.
The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point after two matches, making the double-header a crucial test of their ambitions to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON.
