AFA Brings Back Promotion Playoffs to Argentine Football After 15 Years

Argentine football will bring back promotion and relegation playoffs across its lower divisions starting in the 2027 season, ending a 15-year absence for the format. The decision came out of an Executive Committee meeting held on a Thursday, where officials from the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino mapped out structural changes for divisions below the top flight. While lower categories brace for the return of high-stakes two-legged series, the top-tier Liga Profesional will maintain its current setup without any playoff repechages connecting it to the second division.

Claudio Tapia, president of the AFA, defended the overhaul on social media. “With the commitment and the responsibility of seguir dándole lo mejor al fútbol argentino, we discussed institutional matters, key management axes, and competition planning,” Tapia wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Under the new framework in the Primera Nacional, the two bottom teams in each zone will suffer direct relegation without earning a shot at survival through a playoff. The promotion-relegation playoff mechanism kicks in immediately below that level. The antepenultimate team among clubs directly affiliated with the AFA will face a Primera B opponent in a promotion series, while the antepenultimate side among indirectly affiliated clubs will square off against a team from the Torneo Federal A.

The structural adjustments extend deeper into the pyramid. In the Primera B and Primera C—serving as the third and fourth tiers of Argentine football, respectively—the governing body has instituted playoffs for both promotion and relegation, supplementing the direct promotion and relegation spots already established in those divisions.

The Historical Precedent and Memorable Clashes of Past Eras

The return of these playoffs revives a format that operated in Argentine football between the 1999/2000 and 2011/2012 seasons. Historically, those series unfolded over two legs, with the club fighting for promotion hosting the opening match before traveling to the stadium of the team defending its category. That previous setup granted a significant sporting advantage to the higher-division side: they played the decisive second leg at home and retained their division status simply by tying on aggregate score.

That window produced some of the most dramatic moments in Argentine football history, frequently pulling giants of the domestic game into the scrap for survival. In the 2007/2008 season, Racing Club defeated Belgrano in a promotion series to preserve its top-flight status. San Lorenzo followed a similar path in the 2011/2012 campaign, overcoming Instituto in what proved to be the final promotion series before the AFA abolished the system for a decade and a half. Conversely, the format delivered heartbreak to River Plate, which lost its promotion playoff against Belgrano in the 2010/2011 season and suffered relegation to the second tier.

Deep within the lower levels of the Argentine pyramid, the old playoff era also forged legendary fixtures. Memorable encounters included the battles between Chacarita and Nueva Chicago, immortalized by Jorge “Tano” Pasini’s “avioncito” and a last-minute penalty in San Martín.

What the 2027 Restructuring Means for Lower-Division Clubs

By reintroducing the promotion and relegation playoffs for the 2027 season, the AFA aims to inject heightened competitive intensity into the pyramid beneath the Liga Profesional. Teams fighting to climb out of the Primera B, Primera C, and Federal A categories now face a direct pathway to challenge opponents sitting just above them in the standings. At the same time, traditional clubs hovering near the trapdoor of the Primera Nacional must face the renewed threat of inter-category playoffs rather than relying solely on full-season point totals to secure their standing.

As clubs begin planning their sporting budgets and squad compositions for the coming years, the immediate calendar points toward the 2027 season as the formal implementation date for the new promotion mechanics.
