Black Meteors coach Desmond Ofei has praised Hearts of Oak for their performance in Friday’s 1-0 win over Basake Holy Stars in the Ghana Premier League, saying he enjoyed the match.
Ofei was at the University of Ghana Stadium to watch the match and monitor players as Ghana prepare for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Hearts won the match thanks to a brilliant goal from Martin Karikari late in the game. The attacking midfielder scored a superb volley to give the Phobians all three points.
Ofei believes Hearts of Oak deserved the victory because they created more chances during the match.
“An enjoyable game. I think Hearts of Oak deserved to win. Throughout the game, they created most of the chances. They were a bit unlucky with the finishing, but they scored a beautiful goal at the right time, and the fans enjoyed it,” Ofei said.
Ofei is getting the Black Meteors ready for their upcoming Olympic qualifiers. Ghana hope to qualify for the Olympic football tournament for the first time since 2004.
Meanwhile, the victory was Hearts of Oak's third in a row in the league after earlier wins over FC Port City and Vision FC.
The victory has boosted Hearts of Oak’s hopes of winning the league title. They now have 17 points, the same as league leaders Medeama SC, but remain second because Medeama have a better goal difference.
Basake Holy Stars defended strongly and tried to create chances through counterattacks. However, Karikari finally broke the deadlock with a brilliant finish. He used his footwork to find space before firing a superb volley into the net to give Hearts of Oak their third straight league win.
