Former Tottenham captain and centre-back Graham Roberts has praised Roberto De Zerbi’s impact at the club following their London derby victory over Chelsea.
Graham Roberts is no stranger to success on the football pitch, having been a key figure during one of the most successful eras in Tottenham Hotspur’s history.
Between 1980 and 1986, the former centre-back won several trophies, including the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982. He also captained Spurs to victory in the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht, scoring an equaliser in the second leg and converting his penalty in the shootout.
Given his Tottenham connection, Roberts would no doubt love to see the Lilywhites competing at the top once again, and he is convinced they are on the right track following their latest 2-0 triumph over Chelsea – a club he represented between 1988 and 1990.
Taking to social media after the victory, Roberts was full of praise for Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi, convinced he is the right man for the job.
De Zerbi helped keep Spurs in the top flight last season, securing 11 points from a possible 21. This campaign began with a rocky spell, going winless in the first six matches, but Spurs have now managed back-to-back victories.
Roberts believes De Zerbi deserves time, labelling him the best coach the club has had in many years – seemingly up against the likes of Ange Postecoglou, Thomas Frank, and co.
He wrote: “Absolutely chuffed today, what a great win. So proud of the lads – we have our best coach in many years and the board backed him. He kept us up, now we have to let him have lots of time. It is the best football we have played in a very long time. Delighted to be here today, the fans were amazing again 🙏🙏 COYS.”

Tottenham were outstanding against their London rivals, and the match statistics underline the impact De Zerbi is already having on this team.
Not only did Spurs secure victory, but they did so in dominant fashion, enjoying 69% possession compared to Chelsea’s 31%. They created the better chances and became the first side to prevent the Blues from scoring this season.

Given Tottenham’s struggles at Stamford Bridge over the past three decades – with just one win before Saturday – it is no surprise to see such a reaction from a former Lilywhite.
