Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Tyrone Owusu delivered an impressive individual moment for SC Telstar, scoring a superb long-range goal despite his side suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday at the BUKO Stadion.
The 22-year-old attacker demonstrated his shooting ability with a well-taken effort from outside the penalty area, helping Telstar respond after conceding twice in the opening stages of an entertaining encounter.
Despite the defeat, Owusu’s goal was a major highlight of the match and another positive contribution to his growing influence in Dutch football.
Feyenoord made an explosive start, taking the lead in the opening minute through Malian winger Gaoussou Diarra. The early breakthrough immediately put Telstar under pressure and forced the hosts to adjust their approach as they attempted to recover from the setback.
The visitors continued to press forward and doubled their advantage in the 21st minute when Spanish forward Nacho found the back of the net. With a two-goal cushion, Feyenoord appeared to have established control of the contest, leaving Telstar with a difficult task.
However, Owusu gave the home supporters renewed hope with a moment of individual quality shortly after the second goal.
The Ghanaian forward received an opportunity to test the opposition defence and unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box. His strike beat Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, reducing the deficit and giving Telstar a lifeline in the match.
The finish demonstrated Owusu’s confidence and ability to threaten opponents from distance, qualities that can be valuable in a league where attacking players must make the most of limited opportunities.
His goal also changed the atmosphere of the contest, as Telstar found encouragement to continue pushing forward against one of the Netherlands’ established clubs.
Feyenoord, however, responded by restoring their two-goal advantage in the 32nd minute. Netherlands midfielder Sem Steijn found the net to make it 3-1, once again putting the visitors in a commanding position.
Telstar refused to surrender and continued searching for a way back into the game before the interval. Their determination paid off when Patrick Brouwer scored to reduce the deficit to 3-2, ensuring the home side remained within touching distance heading into the break.
The first half therefore ended with Telstar having fought their way back into contention after falling two goals behind, with Owusu’s strike playing an important role in keeping their hopes alive.
After the restart, Feyenoord looked to regain control and increased their advantage when Steijn converted a penalty shortly after the break. His second goal of the afternoon extended the visitors’ lead to 4-2 and placed Telstar under renewed pressure.
Despite the setback, the hosts continued to fight and refused to allow the match to slip away without a response.
Their persistence produced another goal in the 69th minute when Noach Shenkman found the net after receiving a pass from defender Sem Valk. The strike reduced the deficit to 4-3 and set up a tense final period as Telstar searched for an equaliser.
With the home side pushing forward, the closing stages developed into a battle of determination, with Telstar attempting to rescue a point and Feyenoord working to protect their narrow advantage.
Telstar created further pressure but were unable to find the goal that would have completed their comeback. Feyenoord held firm until the final whistle to secure all three points in a thrilling encounter that produced seven goals.
For Owusu, the defeat did little to diminish the significance of his personal contribution. His impressive strike once again demonstrated his ability to influence matches in the final third and provide Telstar with an attacking threat.
The forward has now scored three goals in nine Eredivisie appearances this season, underlining his growing contribution to the team’s campaign. His performances will be important as Telstar seek to improve their results and establish greater consistency in the Dutch top flight.
Owusu has also registered one goal in four appearances in the Dutch Cup, taking his overall tally to four goals across the two competitions.
Those numbers provide an encouraging indication of his attacking output, particularly as he continues to gain experience against different opponents in Dutch football.
His ability to score from outside the penalty area adds another dimension to Telstar’s attack, making him a player capable of creating opportunities even when opponents defend deep and restrict space around the box.
Although Telstar will be disappointed to have conceded four goals and left the match without a point, Owusu can take confidence from his performance. His contribution helped keep the contest competitive and offered a reminder of his potential to make a difference in difficult circumstances.
The Ghanaian forward will now hope to build on his latest goal-scoring display as Telstar prepare for their upcoming fixtures, with the aim of maintaining his scoring form and helping the team turn promising attacking performances into positive results.
