Pape Thiaw could return to club management sooner than expected, with the former Senegal coach reportedly under consideration for the MC Alger job.
The Algerian club are weighing up a move for the 45-year-old as uncertainty grows over the future of current manager Khaled Ben Yahia, according to WinWin.
MC Alger are enduring a period of significant pressure despite the club’s high ambitions. Ben Yahia, the Tunisian coach, is understood to have grown frustrated by the scrutiny surrounding the team and is reportedly considering his position.
The manager is said to have decided to leave his role, with a meeting between Ben Yahia and the MC Alger board scheduled for Sunday to discuss the terms of his departure.
Ben Yahia’s position has come under increased criticism despite MC Alger’s recovery against Enugu Rangers in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the African Champions League. The Algerian side overturned a 0-2 deficit by winning the return match 3-0.
The 66-year-old returned to the MC Alger bench in March after the departure of Rulani Mokwena and has extensive experience of the club. However, his latest spell could already be nearing its conclusion.
Thiaw is reportedly among the leading candidates being considered by the MC Alger hierarchy should Ben Yahia leave.
The Senegalese coach has been without a club since his dismissal in July, following the Lions’ 3-2 extra-time defeat by Belgium in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. His departure came despite him leading Senegal to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and securing qualification for the World Cup.
The split later became complicated by a financial dispute. In August, Thiaw formally put the Senegalese Football Federation on notice, seeking approximately 647,000 euros for unpaid wages and bonuses among other outstanding sums.
His name had also been mentioned, less prominently, as a possible successor to Carlos Queiroz with Ghana. That possibility did not lead to an appointment.
A move to MC Alger would give Thiaw the chance to return to the day-to-day demands of club football and take on a new challenge in continental competition. However, there have been no confirmed advanced negotiations or agreement between the Algerian club and the Senegalese coach.
The situation will first depend on the outcome of discussions between Ben Yahia and the MC Alger board.
