2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup: Keep the World Cup dream alive – Lawrencia Dziwornu

A Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports, Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu, has rallied support for the Black Maidens ahead of their crucial quarter-final clash against Japan at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana will take on Japan on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the ongoing tournament in Morocco after securing a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Argentina following a 1-1 draw.

In a statement, Madam Dziwornu urged the team to draw confidence from the support of Ghanaians as they seek to move one step closer to a historic World Cup triumph.

“As our Dear Maidens prepare for the quarter-finals against Japan, they should remember that Ghanaians are firmly behind them,” she stated.

She expressed delight at the team’s impressive run and praised their determination and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

According to her, the Black Maidens have displayed patriotism, resilience, and an unyielding attitude, qualities she said were evident in their spirited performance against Argentina, where they fought on despite being reduced
to 10 players.

“Our girls have demonstrated patriotism, resilience and an unyielding spirit throughout the tournament. Their determination against Argentina, particularly after going a player down, was truly remarkable,” she said.

Madam Dziwornu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, believes the current squad has what it takes to surpass Ghana’s previous best performance at the tournament and challenge for the title.

“I hope the team will go a step further than the bronze medal achievement of 2012 and make history by lifting the trophy this time around,” she emphasised.

The MP further described the Black Maidens as “Ghana’s best-performing national football team this year”, noting that their performances have inspired many football fans across the country.

According to her, “Our Black Maidens are not just the pride of today; they represent the future of Ghanaian football.”
