David Moyes’ Everton contract runs out next summer, and those inside the club now have a clear idea of what should happen next.
Despite a chaotic end to the summer window, with just one senior striker and one of the thinnest squads in the league, David Moyes has taken Everton up to seventh and into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
But talks over his future have slowed since The Friedkin Group put the club up for sale last month. And according to Mark Douglas of The i Paper, some at the club feel that needs to change quickly.
Right now, the message from within the club is that stability is of the utmost importance. “Stability is hugely important to the club given the ownership at the moment,” one insider told The i Paper. “You can see from the results that the players react to him and he knows the club inside out. The sensible thing would be to offer him that extension straight away.”
Some figures at the club even believe a short-term extension, for another season, would “make complete sense” while TFG weigh up their options.
Moyes, for his part, is said to be “absolutely driven” and keen to stay. But he wants to be fully backed and make a real push. “He wants to stay beyond the summer but he wants to have a proper go at it,” a source said.
There’s good news on that front, too. The i Paper says the owners are prepared to back Moyes in January, with a loan or permanent deal for a striker top of the list. That’s at odds with Football Insider’s claim that TFG only want loans and free transfers, so January will tell us who’s right.
It’s a difficult one. Plenty of fans are ready for a more modern, forward-thinking manager, and you can understand why. The debate has been bubbling all year long.
But a new manager comes with risk, especially with a club in limbo. Look at West Ham, now on their fourth manager since Moyes left, and relegated.
With Moyes, you know what you’re getting. Safety is all but guaranteed, and there’s an outside chance of a push for Europe, something he’s desperate to achieve before he eventually leaves.
Putting two and two together, if TFG don’t sell, Moyes seems nailed on for a new deal anyway. So if you’re one of those hoping for change, it might be worth accepting it now. It’ll save you some fuming down the line.
