Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from international soccer has left Portugal facing a major leadership change: who will wear the captain’s armband in the post-Ronaldo era? Several candidates were in the running, but head coach Jorge Jesus has now made his decision clear.
Speaking at a news conference, the Portuguese manager explained that the national team traditionally selects its captains based on international appearances, with seniority at the international level determining the pecking order.
“With the national team, captains are chosen based on their international appearances. Right now, there are five players with the most caps. Interestingly, all five of them have played for me at the clubs I’ve coached. We’ll stick with the same approach. The player with the most international appearances after Cristiano Ronaldo is Bernardo Silva. Then come Rúben Dias, João Cancelo, Rúben Neves and Bruno Fernandes. Not necessarily in that order, but those are the five players who can serve as captains,” Jesus said.
Under that system, Bernardo Silva emerges as Portugal’s new captain.
The Real Madrid midfielder leads the five candidates with 115 international appearances, making him the natural choice to take over the armband following Ronaldo’s departure.
The appointment comes at an important moment in Silva’s career. He has been enjoying an increasingly influential role at Real Madrid, where his leadership and importance to the team have continued to grow. Now, he has the opportunity to become the face of Portugal’s next generation following the Ronaldo era.
Although Silva received limited playing time under Jesus during the most recent international break, the midfielder has built a reputation for resilience and determination. He is unlikely to give up his place easily, particularly now that he has been entrusted with the captaincy.
Jesus has also established a clear succession plan for the national team’s leadership group, with the most experienced players expected to share responsibility.
Based on international appearances, the five leading candidates are:
With Silva now wearing the armband, Portugal begins a new chapter without Ronaldo at the center of its leadership structure. The challenge will be maintaining the team’s competitive identity while establishing a new generation of leaders capable of carrying the national team forward.
