FORMER Zambia national team captain and coach Freddie Mwila Snr has died.

Family spokesperson Lillian Kalikeka confirmed to FAZ Media that Mwila, 80, died at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka around 01h00 on Monday after suffering a stroke.

Mwila is one of Zambia’s most decorated football figures. Part of the first generation of Zambians to play professional football abroad with Howard Mwikuta and Emment Kapengwe at Atlanta Chiefs in the USA in 1967, he later captained and coached the national team.

He also had a distinguished coaching career at club level, including spells with Nkana, Power Dynamos and Zesco United.

Kalikeka said the funeral gathering is being held at the family home in Mapepe Farms, opposite Four Pillars Lodge in Chilanga.
