Carlo Ancelotti defends decision to call up Brazilian star for friendlies despite Barcelona concern

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Friday, October 30, 2026, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has defended his decision to include Barcelona winger Raphinha in the squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Japan and Singapore.

Barcelona are reportedly concerned about the forward’s involvement because he has suffered injuries during previous international breaks. The Catalan club fear that another setback could affect his availability during an important period of the season.

However, Ancelotti has insisted that national team selection remains his responsibility and that clubs will not dictate which players he calls up.

Speaking about Brazil’s relationship with European clubs, the Italian manager explained that communication between both sides remains positive, with information regularly exchanged about players.

“We maintain good relationships with Brazilian clubs and with European clubs, with whom we share information about players. In general, this relationship is good,” Ancelotti said.

The former Real Madrid manager also explained that Raphinha’s inclusion forms part of Brazil’s rebuilding process following their disappointing World Cup exit.

Ancelotti wants to assess emerging talents while retaining experienced players who can provide leadership and stability as the national team prepares for its next competitive cycle.

He revealed that the current squad includes nine players of Olympic age, while as many as 15 members are younger than 23.

Despite the emphasis on developing younger footballers, Ancelotti identified five experienced players who will remain central to his plans. They are Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius Junior and Raphinha.

The Barcelona winger is therefore expected to play an important role as Brazil prepare for future competitions, including the Copa America and the next World Cup.

Ancelotti’s decision could create further concerns for Barcelona, who are keen to keep Raphinha fit and available after their recent disappointing results.

The Brazilian will now have to travel for the national team's upcoming fixtures, leaving the Spanish champions monitoring his workload and physical condition.

Barcelona will hope he returns without any injury problems, particularly with the club needing their attacking options available as they attempt to recover their form.
