African players make decisive impact across Europe’s top five leagues

Nicolas Jackson led the weekend’s African standouts after scoring twice for Aston Villa in their 2-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City.

The Senegal international struck in the sixth minute after being played in by John McGinn, before restoring Villa’s lead shortly after half-time. His second goal came after Erling Haaland had equalised, with Jackson’s shot catching Gianluigi Donnarumma by surprise.

The result ended Manchester City’s perfect start to the league season. City had won their opening seven matches, while Jackson was named player of the match and moved on to four Premier League goals.

Aston Villa are now ninth with 11 points.

Wael Mohya inspires Gladbach comeback

At 17, Wael Mohya played a central role in Monchengladbach’s first win of the Bundesliga season, a 3-2 victory at Stuttgart on Friday.

Stuttgart took the lead in the fifth minute, but after Gladbach levelled, Mohya set up Shuto Machino to put his side ahead in the 51st minute. The attacking midfielder of Moroccan origin then headed in Gladbach’s third goal in the 66th minute, following Joe Scally’s delivery.

Mohya attempted four shots during his 70 minutes on the pitch and created two further chances that led to shots. He now has two Bundesliga goals.

Gladbach had lost their previous six matches and the victory brought them their first three points of the campaign.

Elye Wahi contributes to both Nice goals

Elye Wahi scored and assisted in Nice’s 2-1 win at Brest in Ligue 1 on Friday, directly influencing both of his team’s goals.

Brest had led from the 15th minute before Nice equalised in the 61st. Wahi met Mohamed Amoura’s corner at the far post with his right foot.

In the 83rd minute, Wahi carried the ball into the penalty area and set up Sofiane Diop, who scored the winning goal. Wahi received the highest rating of the match, while the goal was his third in Ligue 1 this season.

Nice are 10th in the table.

Zabiri delivers again for Racing Santander

Yassir Zabiri scored the winner as Racing Santander came from behind to beat Espanyol 2-1 in La Liga on Saturday.

Racing had fallen behind in the 62nd minute, but Jeanuel Belocian equalised seven minutes later. Zabiri completed the turnaround in the 84th minute, six minutes before the end of normal time.

The Moroccan striker has now scored eight league goals after 10 rounds of matches. Racing, who had lost at Osasuna in their previous fixture, have 11 points and sit 13th, in mid-table. Espanyol remain in the relegation zone.

Belghali scores first Torino goal

Rafik Belghali put Torino back in front during their 3-2 Serie A win over Monza on Friday.

After Kian Fitz-Jim opened the scoring in the 39th minute, Gustavo Varela brought Monza level two minutes after the interval. Belghali collected a pass from Gineitis in the 61st minute, moved inside and curled a right-footed effort into the net from outside the penalty area.

The Algeria international also supplied the cross for Nikola Vlasic to score Torino’s third in the 72nd minute. It was Belghali’s first goal for the club and his first in Serie A this season.

Torino have 13 points and are eighth.
