Michael Carrick continues to walk a fine line as Manchester United manager. Having already been given one stay of execution this season after the 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, it again looked as if he was heading for the exit door this wee. From 2-0 down, his United side beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League but they trailed by two goals on two separate occasions against Aston Villa on Sunday and again appeared destined for defeat.
Remarkably, United pulled it back to salvage a point in dramatic fashion, with Patrick Dorgu netting a 96th-minute leveller. Joshua Zirkzee had given United a lifeline just four minutes earlier. But despite the late equaliser, United are still in the relegation zone.
They have won just three matches across all competitions this season, while in the Premier League, their record is even worse. The 5-2 triumph against Ipswich Town back on August 30 remains the last time United recorded a league victory and it is their only top-flight win of the campaign. They have gone eight league matches without a win since.
Things are unlikely to get much easier for United when football returns after the international break, as first up for the Red Devils is a trip to Anfield. They did record an unlikely win against the then-champions last season, but with Liverpool having clicked into gear under Andoni Iraola, it looks like a daunting task for United.
The club could even make a change of manager before the trip to Merseyside, as the draw might not be enough to save Carrick's job. Among those to have been linked with the job are Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte.
INEOS could also look towards a shorter term appointment like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season. Kieran McKenna, a former assistant at Old Trafford, has also been touted as a possible candidate.
But if you had the power to decide Manchester United's, who would you opt for? Have your say in our poll below...
Carrick ruled out any prospect of him walking away from the job, but that might not stop INEOS from pulling the plug. However, United legend Gary Neville has labelled the ownership 'clueless' and doesn't have confidence in them to make the right decision.
Speaking on NBC, he remarked: "Michael Carrick did that last season [interim until the end of the season] - so you can paper over the cracks and get a new manager bounce. When the new manager comes in, everybody's happy for a couple of months and all of a sudden, six months later, it happens again.
"You can keep changing the manager and thinking that's going to be the answer. But this has been proven now over eight managers in 12 years, that's not the answer. Michael could leave, Michael might stay, we don't know, the ownership don't have a clue what to do.
"It's rinse and repeat. Amorim, Ten Hag, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Carrick, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes, Ralf Rangnick - some of them are world class managers who have had success, there are a lot of promising young managers there, ex players who know the club as well.
"None of it has worked because if you recruit badly, if you've got poor performance department, poor recruitment department, you've not got leadership that is strong right through the spine of the football club you will fail.
"Every organisation in the world will fail if you've not got an aligned leadership from top to bottom - your board and your ownership right the way through to the person who is stood on the pitch trying to play football.
"There are real issues within that football club, you've got people doing those jobs who have never done those jobs before in senior positions."
