Four goals, no victory: Man. United sink into relegation zone after Villa thriller

Manchester United’s Premier League crisis deepened on Sunday as Michael Carrick’s struggling side slipped into the relegation zone despite staging a remarkable late comeback to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

In an extraordinary eight-goal encounter, United recovered from a two-goal deficit inside the opening four minutes, surrendered their advantage, fell two goals behind again and then produced a dramatic stoppage-time fightback to salvage a point.

Patrick Dorgu emerged as the unlikely hero, scoring the equaliser in the 96th minute after Joshua Zirkzee had reduced Villa’s advantage four minutes earlier, sparking celebrations among the 74,149 spectators at Old Trafford.

However, the point did little to disguise the alarming situation confronting one of English football’s most successful clubs, whose inability to turn attacking promise into consistent results has plunged them into a relegation battle.

United‘s defensive frailties were exposed almost immediately when Alysson put Villa ahead in the opening minute, converting a pass from John McGinn.

Before the home side could recover, Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s advantage in the fourth minute, capitalising on a rebound to leave United facing another humiliating afternoon.

The hosts responded through captain Bruno Fernandes, who converted a penalty in the 16th minute following a VAR review of Boubacar Kamara’s challenge.

The goal restored some confidence, and United gradually established greater control, with Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Kobbie Mainoo threatening Villa’s defence.

Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when Youri Tielemans converted a pass from Noussair Mazraoui to bring United level at 2-2 before the interval.

But United’s defensive problems resurfaced almost immediately after the restart.

Diogo Dalot conceded a penalty in the 47th minute, allowing McGinn to restore Villa’s advantage from the spot.

Six minutes later, Leon Goretzka pounced on a rebound to extend the visitors’ lead to 4-2, leaving United staring at another damaging defeat.

Carrick responded with substitutions, introducing Mason Mount, Shea Lacey and Dorgu in an attempt to inject fresh energy into his team.

Mount struck the crossbar in the 89th minute before Zirkzee, introduced in place of Bryan Mbeumo, converted Dorgu’s pass in the second minute of stoppage time to reduce the deficit.

With time running out, Dorgu completed the comeback in the 96th minute following a corner from Fernandes to secure a 4-4 draw.

Yet, the dramatic recovery raised a troubling question about United’s season: how can a team capable of scoring four goals against Aston Villa remain so vulnerable defensively?

The crisis extends beyond Sunday’s result. United have endured a disastrous league campaign, with inconsistent performances, defensive errors and an inability to sustain winning momentum undermining their ambitions.

Their struggles have intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership, with supporters increasingly frustrated by the club’s inability to rediscover the consistency and authority that once made Old Trafford a feared destination for visiting teams.

United’s problems have also revived uncomfortable memories of previous periods of decline. In November 1986, a similarly disastrous start to the season led to the dismissal of Ron Atkinson and the appointment of Sir Alex Ferguson, who subsequently transformed the club into the dominant force in English football.

Four decades later, United are again confronting a crisis that threatens their standing among the Premier League’s elite.

A humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on October 25 intensified speculation over Carrick’s future, while a subsequent 2-0 loss to Chelsea further exposed the team’s weaknesses.

Tuesday’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over AS Roma had offered temporary relief, with United recovering from a two-goal half-time deficit through Fernandes’ penalty and two late goals from Matheus Cunha.

However, Sunday’s encounter demonstrated that the team’s capacity for spectacular comebacks has not translated into sustained improvement.

Former United manager Erik ten Hag has also warned that relegation could become a genuine possibility, pointing to the danger of a struggling side becoming trapped in a prolonged downward spiral.

Discontent among supporters has meanwhile intensified, with fans staging protests against the Glazer family and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, demanding changes after years of underachievement.
