Nottingham Forest tried to sign a host of players during the summer transfer window, with five new additions joining the football club.
Oliver Glasner told Evangelos Marainkis what he wanted, with a striker and a right-back, the order of the day before the season got underway.
Forest landed Xaver Schlager, Steven Benda and Ousmane Diomande before Daniel Munoz was added as the preferred right-sided wing-back option and Liam Delap joined as the club’s new striker.
If he's not the best, we'd love to know who is…
There were a number of players linked with Forest that didn’t come to fruition, however, and one journalist has now suggested a club was mad to reject the advances of the Reds in the summer.
Read was close to Forest at one point during the summer window. Feyenoord held firm, however, and maintained their desire only to sell him on their terms.
Roma also came close to snaring the player to Serie A, but in the end it proved a race that neither Forest nor the Italian outfit could win, with Read still at Feyenoord now.
Read has begun the season pretty well in the Netherlands. He was named Player of the Month in the Eredivisie for September, and although he’s been in good form, journalist Kenneth Perez can’t believe the club didn’t cash in on him.
He told Voetbalpraat: “Turning down £27m is truly criminal!
“I see it differently for Hadj Moussa, but for a right-back, a defender, £27m is almost criminal!”
Read would have been a risky signing for Forest to make this summer. He is unproven at this level, and although he’s got potential, Munoz is a better option for the Reds in their situation with Glasner prioritising quality over quantity.
Whether Forest move for Read again remains to be seen. Glasner would like to get more players in during the January window but with Munoz settling nicely, perhaps other positions are now in need of reinforcing more across the pitch.
