Manchester United could face competition from Crystal Palace for the services of Kieran McKenna, with the Eagles reportedly considering the former Ipswich Town manager as a potential replacement for Pierre Sage.
Palace are assessing their options following a disappointing 5-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, which has intensified scrutiny of Sage’s position. The Frenchman was appointed in June after Oliver Glasner’s departure, but inconsistent performances have raised concerns about the team’s progress.
Although Sage is expected to receive additional time to turn things around, further disappointing results could prompt the club to reconsider its managerial position.
McKenna has emerged as a possible successor should Palace decide to make a change. The 40-year-old Northern Irishman has been without a club since leaving Ipswich Town during the summer after guiding the team back to the Premier League. His achievements at Portman Road included three promotions within four-and-a-half seasons, strengthening his reputation as a promising manager.
Manchester United are also monitoring McKenna amid growing pressure on Michael Carrick. United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United extended their disappointing run, with Carrick reportedly recording just two victories in 10 matches this season.
McKenna previously interviewed for United’s head coach position in 2024, but the club ultimately retained Erik ten Hag. He also has considerable experience at Old Trafford, having managed the Under-18s before serving as an assistant under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
Any potential appointment could cost approximately €8.3 million (£7 million), with Ipswich reportedly holding contractual protection until June 2027.
Both clubs have European fixtures this week, offering their managers opportunities to improve results. Palace face Besiktas in the Europa League on Thursday, while United travel to Como for their Champions League match on Wednesday.
