Frank Lampard Makes Chelsea Slip-Up During Coventry Interview After Tottenham Defeat

According to a report by Chelsea Chronicles on Friday, October 23, 2026, Frank Lampard accidentally referred to Coventry City as "Chelsea" during a post-match interview following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, highlighting his long-standing connection with the Stamford Bridge club.

The Coventry City manager made the slip while discussing his team’s performances and the challenges facing players who competed in the Championship last season.

Lampard spent 13 years as a Chelsea player and remains one of the most celebrated figures in the club’s history. He scored 211 goals to become the Blues’ all-time leading goalscorer, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2012.

The former England international also managed Chelsea during two separate spells, further strengthening his ties with the west London club.

However, Lampard is now focused on his responsibilities at Coventry City, where he is leading the team in the Premier League.

Speaking after the defeat to Tottenham, the 47-year-old highlighted how his players were competing against established Premier League sides despite having only recently secured promotion.

"But when you think of eight of our starting players who were in the Championship team last year, they’ve had a tough start for different reasons, but they’re playing now.

"If you didn’t know, just Tottenham and Chelsea, uh Coventry here like this, you wouldn’t know to say who’s the team that have been in the Premier League for the last 50 years or who’s the team that’s been out of it for 25 years. And that, for me, is a big deal from what the players produce."

Lampard’s accidental mention of Chelsea quickly became a talking point, with the former Blues midfielder appearing to catch himself before correcting the club’s name.

His comments came after Coventry suffered a disappointing defeat against Tottenham, providing another test for a team adjusting to life among England’s top-flight clubs.

Lampard had also previously teased Tottenham ahead of the encounter, adding further interest to the fixture.

Despite his current role at Coventry, his connection with Chelsea remains significant because of his achievements as both a player and manager.
