According to a report by Football London on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Gary Neville has given his verdict on Cole Palmer’s dismissal during Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Tottenham dominated much of the London derby, putting Chelsea under sustained pressure before breaking the deadlock in the second half. The visitors later scored again to secure a crucial away victory.
Chelsea struggled to take control of the contest, creating few clear opportunities and failing to respond effectively to Tottenham’s dominance. Their hopes of staging a comeback suffered another setback when Palmer received a second yellow card with around ten minutes remaining.
Neville backed referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to send off the Chelsea midfielder, arguing that the England international had lost his composure during the closing stages of the match.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Manchester United defender said Palmer was fortunate not to be sent off following an earlier incident before committing another challenge that deserved a dismissal.
“I think he’s right, he’s absolutely spot on Chris Kavanagh. Cole Palmer’s lost his head in his last ten, fifteen minutes. He was lucky with that first one not to go. And that one is a no-brainer,” Neville explained.
The dismissal marks the first red card of Palmer’s professional career and presents another challenge for Chelsea, who must now cope with his absence from their upcoming Carabao Cup fixture.
Palmer’s sending-off has also renewed concerns about Chelsea’s discipline, with the club continuing to struggle with avoidable bookings and dismissals during difficult matches.
Since the beginning of last season, Chelsea have reportedly received nine Premier League red cards, significantly more than any other team over the same period.
Their disciplinary problems have repeatedly disrupted the team’s momentum, leaving them vulnerable when matches become more intense and opponents increase the pressure.
Chelsea will need to improve their composure and decision-making to avoid similar setbacks during the remainder of the campaign.
Following their disappointing defeat to Tottenham, the Blues must address both their tactical weaknesses and disciplinary record as they prepare for their next competitive fixture.
