Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery to treat a fractured jaw sustained during the club’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
According to the Evening Standard on Sunday, October 18, 2026, the Argentine was taken to hospital after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday’s encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The incident occurred midway through the second half and prompted an extended stoppage as medical staff attended to both players.
Martinez received treatment on the pitch for approximately 10 minutes before being stretchered off and transferred to a nearby hospital for further examinations. The seriousness of the incident raised immediate concerns about his condition, with Chelsea awaiting the results of the medical assessment before providing a formal update.
The club later confirmed that the 34-year-old had sustained a fractured jaw that required surgery, as well as concussion. Chelsea also offered reassurance that the injury had not caused serious brain damage, providing some relief following the worrying scenes during the match.
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed that Martinez’s operation had been successful and expressed their support for the goalkeeper throughout his recovery.
The statement read: "Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw.
"Martinez was injured following a collision midway through the second half of our 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
"Martinez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery.
"Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout."
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had previously addressed the incident after the final whistle, explaining that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium and had been taken to hospital for precautionary examinations.
"As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious. Now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests. Let’s see, but this is what I know so far," Alonso said.
Before being forced off, Martinez had produced an encouraging display, making two important saves as Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory. The result also delivered the club’s first Premier League clean sheet since January, providing a positive outcome despite the goalkeeper’s injury.
Pedro Neto scored both goals for Chelsea and dedicated the victory to Martinez, acknowledging the concern surrounding his teammate’s condition.
The goalkeeper’s absence could create another selection challenge for Alonso as Chelsea continue their domestic campaign. The club are already managing several injury concerns, including captain Reece James, who has undergone knee surgery, while Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are also unavailable.
Although the successful operation represents an important step in Martinez’s treatment, Chelsea have not confirmed a return date. His recovery will depend on his progress following jaw surgery and concussion, with the club expected to monitor his condition before determining when he can resume playing.
For now, Chelsea will focus on supporting the goalkeeper through rehabilitation while assessing their available options for the matches ahead.
