According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Aston Villa claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League, with Johan Manzambi scoring the decisive goal to secure three important points for Unai Emery’s side.
Newcastle started brightly and created an early opportunity through Joe Willock, who fired narrowly wide from inside the penalty area in the 16th minute. Aston Villa responded through Nicolas Jackson, but his effort lacked the power to trouble the goalkeeper.
Both teams continued battling for control, with the match becoming increasingly physical as players fought for possession and several bookings were issued.
Villa eventually took the lead in the 36th minute when João Gomes delivered an excellent lofted cross into the penalty area. Manzambi connected with the delivery and guided a header inside the left post to give the visitors the advantage before half-time.
Newcastle looked to respond after the break and introduced William Osula and Bazoumana Touré to strengthen their attacking options. However, the hosts struggled to find a way through Villa’s organised defence.
Villa continued to threaten at the other end, with Matty Cash firing narrowly wide in the 68th minute. Ross Barkley also forced an impressive two-handed save from Lukas Horníček five minutes later.
The visitors faced injury concerns during the second half, as Manzambi was replaced in the 72nd minute after receiving treatment. Aaron Wan-Bissaka also had to leave the field with an injury.
Newcastle pushed forward in the closing stages, but Yoane Wissa sent an effort wide in the 85th minute, while Villa’s Ibrahim Mbaye missed a late opportunity to extend the lead.
Despite six minutes of added time, Newcastle could not find an equaliser. Aston Villa held on to secure a valuable away victory, with Manzambi’s first-half header proving decisive.
