AC Milan’s 3–1 victory over Inter on October 31 gave Ruben Amorim an important derby success, with Diego Moreira delivering one of the standout individual performances of the Serie A season.
Moreira contributed a goal and two assists as Milan ended Inter’s unbeaten start to the league campaign. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the fourth minute, heading home Moreira’s cross. Adrien Rabiot doubled Milan’s advantage six minutes later after another Moreira delivery from a corner.
Inter responded through Alessandro Bastoni, who scored in the 22nd minute. However, Moreira restored Milan’s two-goal lead just before half-time with an excellent left-footed free-kick.
The tactical preparation behind Milan’s fast start was particularly important. The Guardian’s match analysis highlighted Amorim’s decision to restore several key players after the midweek defeat to Bologna and return to a back-three system.
Milan also showed their quality from set pieces. Rabiot’s goal came from a rehearsed corner routine, while Moreira’s free-kick punished Inter before the break. Opta Analyst also highlighted Moreira’s influence on all three goals.
Inter created opportunities to get back into the contest, but Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan made important saves, including a crucial stop against Djed Spence.
The result was more than local bragging rights. It ended Inter’s unbeaten league start and gave Amorim’s team a significant response after their defeat to Bologna.
However, one derby victory does not settle the title race. Milan must now show that this level of organisation and attacking quality can be maintained in their remaining league fixtures.
