Barcelona risk losing teenage defensive target as Manchester United join transfer race

According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Barcelona could face stronger competition in their pursuit of Ruud Nijstad after Manchester United reportedly entered the race to sign the highly rated FC Twente centre-back.

Reports indicate that Manchester United have received positive scouting assessments of the 18-year-old defender, whose potential has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Brentford, Everton and Sunderland are also monitoring Nijstad as the competition for his signature intensifies.

Barcelona previously explored the possibility of signing the teenager last summer, reportedly submitting an offer worth close to €8 million. However, Twente rejected the proposal and remain in a strong negotiating position, with the defender under contract until June 2029.

Nijstad’s qualities are understood to have attracted Barcelona’s interest, particularly his physical presence, technical ability and potential to develop into a long-term defensive option. Standing at 1.95 metres, the left-footed centre-back also possesses the ability to play out from the back, a quality that could suit the Catalan club’s style of football.

The youngster has reportedly expressed admiration for Barcelona in the past, describing them as the biggest club in the world. This could potentially favour the Spanish side, although his appreciation for the club does not guarantee a move to Camp Nou.

Barcelona must now decide whether to revive their interest and improve their previous offer as competition from English clubs continues to grow.

With Twente under no immediate pressure to sell, the Catalan giants could face a challenging negotiation if Manchester United or another interested club makes a formal approach.
