According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Real Madrid explored potential moves for Manchester City defender Ruben Dias and Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni before deciding to sign Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer during the summer window.
According to the report, Bastoni was among the defenders considered by the Spanish giants. However, Inter Milan were unwilling to let the Italian international leave, forcing Madrid to look at other options. Barcelona were also reportedly interested in securing his services.
Dias was another defender on Real Madrid’s shortlist. The Manchester City centre-back’s experience and defensive quality made him an appealing target, but the club eventually settled on Konate, who arrived after leaving Liverpool.
Despite Konate’s signing, Madrid remain concerned about their options in central defence. Eder Militao’s injury problems and David Alaba’s departure during the summer have left manager Jose Mourinho with limited choices at the back.
As a result, the Spanish club could return to the transfer market in search of additional defensive reinforcements. Reports suggest that signing another centre-back is among Madrid’s priorities for 2027, although an earlier move during the January transfer window remains a possibility if their defensive difficulties continue.
Konate’s arrival on a free transfer could prove financially beneficial for the club. However, Madrid will still need to strengthen their defensive depth to ensure they have enough dependable players to compete across all competitions throughout the season.
