According to a report by Football Transfer on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly made enquiries about Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez and Atletico Madrid's Pablo Barrios as they consider strengthening their squad ahead of the next transfer window.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult campaign, increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick as he attempts to address several problems affecting the team's performances. United will face Chelsea in their next Premier League fixture, but the rivalry between the clubs could also continue in the transfer market.
Chelsea are also interested in strengthening their midfield, with Lopez among their potential targets. The London club previously attempted to sign the Barcelona midfielder in the summer of 2025, but their offer was rejected by the Catalan giants.
Despite Lopez signing a new long-term contract with Barcelona, interest in the 22-year-old has continued, with recent reports suggesting that Chelsea could consider making a significant offer to persuade the Spanish club to sell.
However, Manchester United have now emerged as potential rivals for both Lopez and Barrios, according to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto. He revealed that United used their recent Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid to gather information about the two midfielders.
“There is a Premier League club — Manchester United — who have many issues to address and are looking for a type of midfielder with the same characteristics as Barrios and Fermin,” Moretto explained.
The journalist added that United had made enquiries about both players, although no formal negotiations had taken place. He also warned that convincing Barcelona or Atletico Madrid to part ways with their midfielders would be a difficult task.
Barrios remains an important figure in Atletico's midfield despite recurring muscular injuries, while Lopez continues to feature prominently in Barcelona's plans. Both clubs are therefore expected to demand substantial fees before considering any potential departures.
United's interest is notable given that they signed three midfielders during the previous summer transfer window. Lopez's attacking qualities could also make him an option if Bruno Fernandes eventually leaves Old Trafford.
Fernandes' future remains uncertain after attracting criticism for publicly questioning Carrick. Although United have an option to extend his contract, his long-term position at the club has yet to be settled.
Financial demands could also complicate United's pursuit of the Spanish duo. Lopez is valued at approximately €116.5 million, while Barrios carries an estimated valuation of €57 million, taking their combined value to €173.5 million.
With other areas of the squad also requiring investment, United may find it difficult to justify such significant spending on two midfielders despite their growing interest.
