Ferguson Was Always Our Boss, The Boss Of Every Coach –Mourinho

José Mourinho has paid a glowing tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the legendary former Manchester United manager as the personification of the club and an influential figure for coaches across the football world. According to a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on X on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Portuguese manager made the comments in a special video celebrating the 40th anniversary of Ferguson’s appointment at Old Trafford.

Mourinho, who managed Manchester United between 2016 and 2018, used the occasion to recognise Ferguson’s remarkable contribution to the club and his influence on generations of managers. He highlighted the authority and respect the Scottish tactician commanded throughout his career, suggesting that his legacy extends well beyond his achievements on the pitch.

“For me, he was always our boss, the boss of every coach,” Mourinho said.

The former United manager also underlined the inseparable relationship between Ferguson and the English club, describing him as the figure who represents Manchester United’s identity and history.

“I think he is Manchester United,” Mourinho added.

Ferguson took charge at Old Trafford on November 6, 1986, beginning a managerial journey that would continue for 26 years. He remained in the position until announcing his retirement in 2013, having established one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Under his leadership, Manchester United became a dominant force in English football and a regular contender for European honours. Ferguson guided the club to 13 Premier League championships and two UEFA Champions League titles, achievements that helped secure his place among football’s greatest managers.

His overall record at Old Trafford included 38 major trophies, an extraordinary collection that reflected his consistency, ability to rebuild successful teams and capacity to maintain high standards over an extended period.

Mourinho was among several prominent former Manchester United figures who participated in the anniversary celebration. Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Bryan Robson and Ole Gunnar Solskjær also contributed to the tribute, sharing their memories and reflecting on the influence Ferguson had during their time at the club.

Ronaldo placed particular emphasis on the manager’s role in nurturing young players. The Portuguese forward recalled how Ferguson supported his development during his first spell at Old Trafford, helping him mature into one of the leading footballers of his generation.

The contributions from former players and coaches demonstrated that Ferguson’s legacy is not measured solely by the number of trophies he won. His leadership, discipline, man-management skills and commitment to developing talent were also central to the success he achieved.

His ability to build relationships with players and maintain a winning culture helped shape Manchester United over several generations. Many of those who worked under him have continued to speak highly of his influence long after his retirement.

Four decades after his appointment, Ferguson remains one of the most recognisable figures in Manchester United’s history. Mourinho’s description of him as the embodiment of the club reflects the extraordinary respect he continues to receive from former colleagues, players and leading personalities across football.
