According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea are reportedly considering a surprise move for Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as they look to strengthen their defence following another injury setback for Reece James.
The Premier League club are said to be exploring the possibility of bringing the England international back to English football when the January transfer window opens.
Alexander-Arnold has struggled to secure regular playing time since Jose Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid. The former Liverpool defender has fallen down the club's pecking order and is reportedly unhappy with his limited opportunities in the first team.
The 28-year-old has made just four starts this season, raising further questions about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Chelsea could become a possible destination for the defender if he decides to leave the Spanish giants.
Brown revealed that he had heard Alexander-Arnold's name being discussed in connection with a potential move to Stamford Bridge. He also suggested that the defender's position at Real Madrid had weakened considerably, with the England international now regarded as the club's second or third choice in his position.
He further indicated that Mourinho has concerns about Alexander-Arnold's defensive ability, despite recognising his attacking and creative qualities.
Meanwhile, Reece James' latest injury setback could increase Chelsea's need to sign another right-back. The club captain has undergone surgery after suffering a knee injury during a training session and is not expected to return until at least mid-January.
With James unavailable, Malo Gusto is expected to take over at right-back under Xabi Alonso. His absence could prompt the Chelsea hierarchy to consider adding another defender to the squad in January.
Brown also believes Chelsea would be interested in Alexander-Arnold because the club are willing to pursue established, high-profile players when suitable opportunities arise.
Although Liverpool have also been linked with a possible move, Brown does not consider a return to Anfield particularly likely because of the circumstances surrounding the defender's departure from the club.
Alexander-Arnold's previous working relationship with Alonso at Real Madrid could also make a move to Chelsea attractive. Their familiarity could increase the possibility of the defender reuniting with the Spanish manager at Stamford Bridge.
