Former Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna has revealed how an unexpected letter from Real Madrid gave him a significant emotional lift while recovering from a serious injury that threatened to derail his career in 2011.
According to a report published by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the former France international received a message from the Spanish giants after fracturing his fibula during a match against Tottenham Hotspur. The thoughtful gesture provided encouragement at a time when he was struggling with the physical and emotional challenges of rehabilitation.
Sagna joined Arsenal from French side Auxerre in 2007 under manager Arsene Wenger and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s dependable right-backs. However, the injury arrived during a period when he believed he was producing some of the best performances of his career.
Recalling the experience, Sagna explained that he was taken by surprise when a receptionist at Arsenal’s training facility handed him a letter from Real Madrid.
“I broke my fibula against Tottenham in 2011. I was playing my best football, but unfortunately, I suffered that bad injury,” he said.
The correspondence had been signed by Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid’s director, who expressed sympathy over the defender’s setback and wished him a swift recovery.
For Sagna, the message carried a significance that extended beyond its simple words of encouragement. At a time when being unable to play had affected his confidence and morale, receiving recognition from one of the world’s most prominent football clubs helped him feel appreciated.
“You have no idea how much that letter meant to me, and how it really moved me. It made me so happy. It gave me a massive boost when I was feeling down because of the injury,” he explained.
The gesture also made the defender realise that his performances for Arsenal had attracted attention beyond the Premier League. Sagna said the letter prompted him to recognise that Real Madrid were aware of his abilities and had been following his progress.
“I told myself: ‘Wow, this means Real Madrid know me. They’ve been monitoring me,’” he added.
Despite the initial setback, Sagna eventually returned to competitive football. His recovery journey was not straightforward, however, as he suffered another fracture to the same bone before managing to make a further comeback.
The former Arsenal player revealed that he has preserved the letter ever since, highlighting the lasting impact of the club’s kindness during one of the most challenging periods of his professional career.
“I still have that letter to this day. It’s not going anywhere. That’s how special that letter is to me,” Sagna said.
He also credited the message with strengthening his determination to return to action, explaining that the encouragement helped motivate him throughout rehabilitation.
“It really made me want to come back on the pitch, and I did come back, actually. Then I broke my fibula again, and I came back once more.”
Sagna’s account illustrates how a thoughtful gesture from another club can have a lasting impact on a player’s confidence and determination during a difficult period.
