Fran Gonzalez explains his decision to leave Real Madrid

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 8, 2026, Fran González has explained his reasons for leaving Real Madrid to join Sevilla during the summer transfer window, admitting that although he regards the Spanish giants as the best club in the world, he felt the time had come to pursue a new ambition.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper brought his long-standing association with Real Madrid to an end after spending several years developing his football career within the club's renowned youth academy, La Fábrica.

González completed a €3 million transfer to Sevilla after realising that his chances of securing regular first-team opportunities at the Santiago Bernabéu were limited. Despite finding the decision difficult, the young Spaniard believed moving elsewhere was necessary to continue his development and take another important step in his professional career.

Before his departure, González had featured for Real Madrid Castilla and made just one senior appearance for the club's first team.

Speaking about his decision to leave, the goalkeeper explained that he felt his time with Real Madrid Castilla had reached its natural conclusion and that moving to another club was the right move for his future.

He admitted that he had reached an important stage in his development and needed to embrace a fresh challenge rather than remain in a situation where his opportunities could be restricted.

“I had closed a chapter there in Madrid, with Castilla, and I believed the best thing for me was to take that leap, wherever it might be,” González said, as quoted by Diario AS.

The Spanish youngster also discussed the challenges young goalkeepers face when moving into senior football, particularly when making the transition from Primera RFEF to a more competitive level.

According to González, it is understandable that young goalkeepers may not immediately become regular starters when joining a new club because adapting to a higher standard of competition requires patience and experience.

“Obviously, it's normal for young goalkeepers not to play right away, no matter where they go, because I come from the Primera RFEF, a competition that has improved a lot in recent years, but it's a big step. I feel very prepared to make that leap,” he added.

González believes his time at Real Madrid provided him with valuable experience and helped prepare him for the demands of professional football. However, he felt that leaving the club would give him a better opportunity to fulfil his personal ambitions.

Sevilla eventually became his preferred destination because of the club's impressive history, reputation and potential opportunities for him to establish himself as an important member of the first team.

The goalkeeper expressed admiration for the Andalusian outfit, describing it as one of the biggest clubs in Spanish football. He believes the environment at Sevilla offers him an excellent opportunity to continue improving and demonstrate his abilities.

Although González remains grateful for everything Real Madrid contributed to his development, he acknowledged that leaving a club he considers the best in the world was an emotional experience.

Nevertheless, the young goalkeeper is determined to make the most of his new opportunity at Sevilla as he begins another important chapter in his career.
